BKD Portfolio 2009-ish

Hi. I like to make stuff.
My name is Bryan, and I'm a freelance graphic and interactive designer working in the greater Minneapolis, MN area.

This site is a showcase of some of my recent web, print, and photo work. I especially enjoy the web part — and am fluent in web languages like XHTML, CSS, and PHP — but dabble in many other things, too.

My work has been featured in numerous web design galleries, and multiple sites I've designed and manage have over 500 unique visitors a day.

If you'd like to work together in the future, drop me an email or a phone call. I'd love to talk with you.

Nostalgic for the International Harvester advertising films they grew up watching, Farmington Implement saved many of them from being destroyed and now restores them.

The site fits the feeling of the old films and has a store with embedded video previews of each DVD. It's built on WordPress, so every part is editable.

After the site was launched they wrote saying "Bryan's constant striving for perfection delivered a professional product that is appreciated and profitable." That's pretty cool.

A Buncha Websites

I've created and currently maintain a lot of websites. (A lot.) You don't have all day to read me brag about them, though. Here's a sampling from the past two years that will give you an idea of my style.

These are all people, businesses, and organizations that I love and support. Check 'em out:

(There's more web work with more information elsewhere on this page.)

Cover of The Computer Athletes Handbook

Cover for the Computer Athlete's Handbook — I worked with author Brian Bentow to design the cover for his book for those who want to become more skilled at working with the computer.

Fun facts: I shot the cover image in the locker room of the high school I graduated from. The mouse is the same mouse I've used for the past three years, and that apple was pretty tasty.

Order a copy for yourself from the book's page on Amazon or read the full text online for free.

I also do some identity and logo work. In this group:

— The logo for JB Studios Photography is designed to be used as a watermark in images. "Photography" is changed out with ".info" or "proof" based on the context. 10/08

— Identity created for Red Rock On Air. 02/09

— Logo for the band Intensive Care for use online, on t-shirts, and other merchandise based on ideas they had. Check them out playing I Feel Good this summer in Siren, Wisconsin. 09/09

— Seasonal and event-related varations on Frederic EFC's logo. 08–09

In 2007 I worked with CrexTechs to redesign Burnett Dairy Cooperative's website with a completely new design, reworked content, and a full-featured online store.

The design has been featured and mentioned in many different web design galleries, popular web development blogs, and other sites like Flickr.

12/07–present

I also designed two billboards for the Dairy to advertise their retail cheese store and the website. It was a new experience for me working in such a large format (12' × 24'). An attractive and simple design is necessary to keep things readable at a glance.

For one summer my little brothers had what might have been the most awesome garage band ever: Break Even. They asked me to take some publicity shots for use around the internet, which I had a blast doing.

Although the band is no longer together you can still check out their tracks on Purevolume.

Red Rock On Air website

Red Rock Radio in Pine City, MN approached CrexTechs about a redesign to their old website that would be more dynamic. Red Rock On Air was launched in August 2008, and had over 32,000 page views in November '09.

The new site is built on the WordPress content management system, which is configured to allow easy access for uploading audio clips, specifying featured stories, and creating polls.

Today, the site has an archive of over 1,700 stories and 500 comments from readers.

08/08

In addition to designing and maintaining the website, I volunteer a lot of other design work to Antioch Community Church in NE Minneapolis.

Here are some examples from different sermon series and projected graphics from the past year.

'08–'09

I designed these stickers for Thinking Pink Creations, a creator of hand-made greeting cards.

Tracy and I worked together to develop a logo and design that works well on her products.

7/09

I occasionally compile wedding memory books for JB Studios. The challenge is in sorting through many different pictures and finding unique and appealing layouts for each spread.

04/08

I've worked with Martin Dikkers of Cardinal Accounting on many different branding aspects over the last couple years.

Besides his website and letterhead/stationary pictured here, I've designed two holiday cards, a newspaper ad, and window decals. (Images coming soon.)

BONUS! I take pictures and post them to a personal site called Grainy & Blurred and write dumb nerd jokes and what I'm up to on Twitter.
